TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a non-pharmacological therapy recommended by the American Psychiatric Association since 2010 for treating Major Depressive Disorder.⁠

During treatment, magnetic pulses are delivered through a coil to stimulate nerve cells in the brain areas that regulate mood. Repeated stimulation of these regions can have an antidepressant effect on those with Major Depressive Disorder.⁠

Each session lasts about 20-30 minutes on average. Since TMS is non-invasive, it doesn't require anesthesia, doesn't affect cognitive function, and has no systemic side effects. The most common side effects of TMS are headache and discomfort at the stimulation site. In rare cases seizures may occur, but the risk is very low (<0.1% per patient) when treatment is performed according to the safety recommendations for TMS therapy.⁠

Key players in this intricate network are the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine. When the levels of these chemicals become imbalanced, depression can take hold.

Pinpointing the exact triggers of these imbalances remains a challenge. While the causes of depression are not fully understood, they can stem from a combination of biological factors and environmental influences, such as significant stress. Identifying the underlying factors contributing to depressive episodes is crucial for effective treatment.

MagVenture deltager ved årets Folkemøde 2025 i debatten om fremtidens psykiatri i Danmark.

Folkemødet på Bornholm er en unik begivenhed, hvor politikere, borgere, virksomheder og organisationer mødes for at drøfte samfundets største udfordringer – i en demokratisk dialog åben for alle.

I år deltager MagVenture i samarbejde med Medicoindustrien, i en debat om psykiatriens fremtid – og om hvordan TMS (Transkraniel Magnetisk Stimulation) kan spille en afgørende rolle i behandlingen af patienter med behandlingsresistent depression. Vores kollega Frode Bjerkely deltager i panelet sammen med repræsentanter fra Medicoindustrien, Depressionsforeningen, Psykiatrifonden og privatpraktiserende psykiatere.

Som en dansk virksomhed og global leder inden for TMS-teknologi er vi stolte over at være en del af denne vigtige samtale om fremtidens psykiatri.
