A day like today, 40 years ago, on February 12, 1985, Dr. Tony Barker and Ph.D. student Reza Jalinous, from Sheffield, visited Prof. Pat Merton's lab at the Institute of Neurology in London to present an innovative device capable of safely stimulating the human brain.⁠

The choice of Prof. Merton's lab was strategic, years earlier, he had successfully demonstrated electrical stimulation of the brain.⁠
⁠
That day, Prof. Merton became the first person to test the device, placing a 90 mm round coil on his head. The resulting thumb movement from the stimulation officially marked the birth of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).⁠

Inspired by the success, Dr. Barker published an article in The Lancet on May 11, 1985, titled "Non-Invasive Magnetic Stimulation of Human Motor Cortex," detailing this groundbreaking innovation.⁠

✨ This moment was the starting point of a revolution in neuroscience and the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders.⁠
