what is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychological and behavioral disorder in which a person has intrusive thoughts and/or the need to repeatedly (compulsively) perform certain routines to such an extent that they experience distress and an impaired ability to function.
OCD is usually associated with a high level of anxiety as well as feelings of disgust. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 5 million people will experience OCD at some point in their lifetime. It is common for people with OCD to experience other disorders such as major depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety and eating disorders among others.
The WHO list anxiety disorders, including OCD, as the sixth largest contributor to non-fatal loss of health globally. 40-60% of OCD patients do not improve with medication or behavioral therapies .
