What is TMS

Magnetic Stimulation

Magnetic stimulation is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, whereby rapidly changing magnetic fields induces an electrical field in the nervous system. The electric field changes the electrical potential over the nerve cell wall, and if this change is large enough, an action potential in the nerve will be generated.
If the induced electric field and thereby the induced current is of sufficient amplitude and duration, cortical or neuromuscular tissue will be stimulated.
Magnetic stimulation represents a form of “electrode less electrical stimulation”, without the level of pain experienced with normal electrical stimulation. The minute amount of electricity created cannot be felt by the exposed individual, but still the electric charges activate the neurons.
This technique is ideally suited to stimulating superficial tissues like the motor nerves (Functional Magnetic Stimulation – FMS) and the cerebral cortex (TMS or repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)).
Single-pulse TMS and other more recent versions (paired-pulse TMS, repetitive TMS, integration with structural and functional MRI, and neuronavigation) allow motor output to be mapped precisely to a given area of the body. Moreover, TMS can be used to evaluate excitatory/inhibitory intracortical circuits and to provide information on brain physiology and pathophysiology of various neuropsychiatric diseases as well as on the mechanisms of brain plasticity.

Neurology

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with motor evoked potentials (MEPs) is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that can provide valuable information about the function of the corticospinal tract, which controls voluntary movement. During a TMS with MEPs test, magnetic pulses stimulate specific areas of the brain, while the resulting MEPs in the muscles are recorded.

The recorded MEPs can provide information about the integrity of the corticospinal tract, as well as any abnormalities that may be present. TMS with MEPs can be used to diagnose a variety of conditions, including neuromuscular disorders, motor neuron diseases, spinal cord injuries, and to monitor the progress of patients undergoing rehabilitation after stroke or other neurological injuries.

Safety information

Magnetic stimulation is considered a safe procedure with the most common side effects being relatively mild and transient. The most important safety information is provided below. Please consult the User Guides or your doctor for additional safety information.

Side effects – cortical stimulation (stimulation on the head)

The most commonly reported side effects during and after TMS treatment are minor scalp pain, headache and burning sensation in the area of stimulation . However, these side effects are transient and will usually resolve immediately or within the first week of therapy. In rare cases seizures may occur, but the risk is very low (less than 0.1% per patient) when treatment is performed according to the safety recommendations for TMS therapy. Side effects – peripheral stimulation (stimulation on the body)

The only known side effects of stimulation outside the cortical area are minor pain and tingling at the stimulation site.

Contraindications

The MagVenture TMS Therapy system creates a magnetic field that could cause metal objects near the stimulation coil to move or get hot. Patients with non–removable magnetic-sensitive metals or metallic devices implanted in their head or in body parts near the stimulation coil could experience side effects from the treatment and should not receive therapy with the MagVenture TMS Therapy system.
